Brewin Dolphin Schools Bowl competition – Quarter Final
Linlithgow Academy U-15s 38 vs Ellon Academy U-15s 0
Ellon Academy made the long trip south for a lunch time kick off in this National quarter final match. The game took place in front of a large and vociferous crowd (at least until the bell went!) and the Reds produced another fine display to follow on from their performance against Jordanhill School last Saturday.
The boys are playing with a lot of commitment and confidence and their ability to apply pressure to the opposition in all phases of the game is paying off. There was a real battle up front with the home side having some great forward drives and in defence there was some fine tackling continually stopped the Ellon boys in their tracks.
The Reds opened the scoring after 10 minutes with a fine try by Lewis and this was followed by a try from Gregor T who barged over near the posts. Lewis added another try after fine lead up work involving Finlay and Callum. Jack kicked 2 conversions to make the half time score 19-0.
In the second half, the game was still very competitive and all credit to the Ellon boys for sticking to the task. However the home side’s goal line was never really threatened and they effectively sealed victory with the best try of the match. Cammy fielded a high lick on the half way line and made ground before releasing Finlay who tore through the visitors’ defence and off loaded the ball to Stu who sprinted 20 metres to touch down under the posts. Jack added the simple conversion.
Callum extended the lead with a fine solo try, beating 2 or 3 opponents on the way to the line. The final try was scored just before the end of the game when Jack kicked the ball ahead after a crunching tackle on the Ellon full back by Callum had dislodged the ball. Jack dribbled the ball over the line and just managed to get a fingertip to the ball to touch it down and Ally added the conversion to make the final score 38-0.
Overall this was a fine performance by the whole side and they must take a lot of confidence into the next game.
Finally a big thank you to LRFC stalwart Ken Richardson for refereeing the match and taking the time to explain his decisions clearly to both teams. It is always much appreciated by players and spectators alike.
